Artuqid stone carving at its peak, in the mihrab
History
Completed in the early 13th century under the Artuqids. Kızıltepe's older name is Koçhisar, and the mosque is also known by it. Standing in the middle of the plain, it forms the founding core of the town.
Why go
The mihrab and portal are among the best-preserved examples of Seljuk–Artuqid stone decoration in Anatolia: geometric interlace, rumi motifs and bands of Kufic script are worked into the stone almost like lace. It is the plain's answer to the stone aesthetic of the city above.
Visiting notes
Open for worship and free to visit. Go outside prayer times. On a day trip out of Mardin it fits comfortably into the same day as Dara.
Getting there
About 25 minutes by car: descend from Mardin to the plain and continue towards central Kızıltepe. The mosque is in the town centre.
