Mesopotamian archaeology inside a former patriarchate
History
The museum occupies a building constructed at the end of the 19th century as the Syriac Catholic Patriarchate. With its arcaded galleries and carved façade, it is one of the most striking examples of Mardin's civil architecture.
Why go
The collection spans ten thousand years of the region: Neolithic finds, Assyrian and Roman objects, glass and ceramic vessels, seals and inscriptions. The upper floor holds an ethnography section recreating daily life in a Mardin house.
Visiting notes
Allow an hour. Closed on Mondays; confirm the hours. The building's courtyard and staircases are as impressive as the collection — don't rush them.
Getting there
Just above Republic Square. About an 8-minute walk from the mansion, with steps at the end.
