'Little Mardin' — a stone town above a green valley
History
Savur is a historic town north of Mardin, built on a slope overlooking a stream valley. Carrying layers from Rome to the Ottomans, with its castle remains and old mansions it gives the impression of a small-scale Mardin.
Why go
Mardin's crowds are absent here; children play in the streets and coffee is drunk in doorways. The valley below is deep green and stays cool even in summer. For photographers, the view of the town from the opposite slope is one of the most loved in the region.
Visiting notes
Allow half a day. Tea is served in restored mansions. The paths down into the valley are good for walking — bring comfortable shoes.
Getting there
About 50 minutes by car: turn off for Savur from the Mardin–Midyat road. Can be planned together with Dereiçi village.
