In continuous use since 397

History

Also known as Deyrulumur, Mor Gabriel was founded in 397 and is one of the oldest continuously functioning Syriac Orthodox monasteries in the world. It is the seat of the metropolitan of Tur Abdin.

Why go

The monastery is more than a place of worship: it is a school. Syriac is still taught here and the liturgy is celebrated in it. The mosaics and dome work of the main church carry Byzantine influence. The vineyards and olive groves around it are worked by the monastic community.

Visiting notes

Visits are guided and take place at set hours; confirm times before going. Quiet and modest dress are expected. Ask permission before taking photographs.

Getting there

About 1 hour 10 minutes by car: after passing Midyat, follow the signs for Mor Gabriel; the monastery lies a few kilometres off the main road.
