Ice-cold spring water at the edge of the plain
History
Beyazsu is a recreation area north of Nusaybin formed by springs rising at the foot of the Mazı mountains. It takes its name from the clarity of the water, and has been a place of gathering and cooling off for local people for centuries.
Why go
After coming to know Mardin as stone and dry heat, Beyazsu is a surprise: plane-tree shade, cold running water and green. On summer weekends families picnic here and samovars boil. It is the last green strip before the plain opens out, and an ideal break for anyone who wants to see it.
Visiting notes
The best option for cooling off in summer; in spring the surroundings are in flower. Weekdays are far quieter. Simple restaurants can be found nearby — bring water and a hat.
Getting there
About an hour by car: follow the Mardin–Nusaybin road and turn off for Beyazsu at the entrance to Nusaybin. Fits easily into the same day as the Mor Yakup Church.
